How to use it

  1. Wait until your pet is fully relaxed or asleep, not just lying still while alert.
  2. Watch the flank, the soft area just behind the ribs. One rise and fall counts as one breath.
  3. Count for 15 seconds with a timer, then multiply by 4.
  4. Write it down and circle the status. Do it at roughly the same time each day.

For most cats, 30 or under is normal, 30 to 40 is worth watching, and over 40 means calling your vet promptly. Dogs have a wider normal range, so ask your vet what is normal for yours.

This sheet is for information only and isn't veterinary advice. Every pet is different, always ask your vet what's normal for your own pet.
Prefer not to use paper? Halo's free breathing counter does the 15-second count for you. Halo Plus keeps the full history and trend charts.
